Who are you trying to impress?

Two questions:

1) Who are you trying to impress?

“Nobody” is the cool people’s answer, but don’t say that unless it’s the stone cold truth.

We all know “I don’t have anyone to impress” is the “right” answer on the life 101 exam, but most of us set out to do what we do because there’s somebody out there that we want to have an impact on.

If you’re having difficulty answering this question, think of it in the following way: is there anyone who could disappoint you or hurt your feelings by not paying any attention to what you do? Who is that person?

Once you’ve answered that, then you’re ready for the second question:

2) If I could guarantee that this person will never show any indication of being impressed by you, would your work still be worth doing?

If the answer to that question is “no”, then get out as fast as you can. Find something to do that feels right because it feels right.

If the answer to that question is “yes”, then keep moving forward because you’re on the right track.

That’s today’s two cents.
