Separate the advisers from the bullies

It’s wise to respect other people’s opinions, but it’s equally important to not confuse such respect with giving others the permission to berate or belittle you.

That is to say, never mistake an assault on your dignity for an assessment of your actions.

Your critics have a right to their opinion, but they don’t have a right to your attention.

Any attention you give them is an act of grace on your part and, should your graciousness be taken advantage of, it is your prerogative to terminate the conversation at your discretion.

There is nothing close-minded or arrogant about the refusal to tolerate verbal and emotional abuse.

That’s today’s two cents.
