Entertaining Possibilities Without Prejudice

There’s always another way to look at things.

This observation doesn’t mean, however, that the conventional and traditional ways are wrongheaded, silly, and meaningless.

An alternative isn’t always the same as an antithesis.

Critical thinking is the ability to entertain new possibilities without arbitrarily closing our minds to what remains useful in our previously held perspectives.

The other way doesn’t become the opposite of the older way until we treat it as if it’s the only way.

  1. Knowledge is contextual, hierarchical, cumulative.

The atom was considered the smallest part of matter
until the atom was split. This doesn’t negate that the
atom exists. (In fact it underscores its existence.)

The flat earth belief led ancient astronomers to study
the earth as a planet and see its curves and realize it
    revolves as a round planet.

All of this deepens and widens our knowledge. Even
being mistaken can be a platform to new discoveries if
we use critical thinking: “…..the ability to entertain new
possibilities without arbitrarily closing our minds to what
remains useful in our previously held perspectives.”
