Some situations are just not fun. That’s okay. Life doesn’t need to be fun all the time.
Recently, however, I had a close friend tell me that one of his main life goals was to never be bored. So even though he finds himself in situations that feel boring, he tries to find a way to spice things up. Is there something he can laugh at? Is there something new he can learn? Can his menial work tasks be turned into a game?
This probably doesn’t sound like the best or most comprehensive life philosophy, but it doesn’t have to be. Try it out as a one day exercise in stimulating your creativity. When you go to work, try something like setting a goal to learn three new things about your company history and one new thing about three different people before your work day is over. When you come home, decide to have at least one food item for dinner or dessert that you’ve never had before. It doesn’t even have to be the whole meal. It can just be one element you have with your meal. If you usually sleep in silence, try sleeping to music for one night. If you usually sleep to music, try sleeping in silence or to a different kind of music.
When you wake up in the morning, decide to experiment with 6 new possibilities. Try it out. If it feels like a bore or it’s stressing you out, take a break. The goal is to learn how to play life like a game. So if the exercise ceases to be fun, slow down and be easy on yourself. Making a game of life takes time and there’s a learning curve for having fun.
