Why I value being creative more than being positive

For many people, “being positive” amounts to trying really hard to be a good sport who laughs a lot and gets along with everyone.

But this image of optimism fails to account for all of the healthy, successful people who don’t seem to be friendly, upbeat, or outwardly cheerful at all.

While I freely embrace conventional terms like “positivity”, “optimism”, and “happiness”, in actual practice I tend to be very broad and flexible with how I apply so-called “principles of positive thinking” to my daily life.

I don’t believe success, happiness, and health are the result of “positive thinking” as much as they are the result of “empowered thinking.” For me, optimism isn’t about fitting any one person’s definition of what it means to be positive. Optimism is about finding whatever approach works for you in the quest to create the kind of life you truly love.

It’s far more important that you develop your own process for creating desired results (whether you desire happiness, wealth, or anything else), than striving to outdo the guy who walks around with a smile on his face 7 days a week.

If having a serious face helps you to focus more, then the smiles can wait for a later time.

If you’ve found a way to successfully channel the feeling of anger along creative lines, may the force be with you.

Forget about the positivity stereotypes. Trying to conform to them is a big pain in the tush.

After all, the value of your life isn’t determined by how positive others think you are, but by what works and feels right for you.

The Coin of Heaven

“Thought is the coin of heaven. You must stop spending your thoughts, time, and money. Everything in life must be an investment. Stop all of the old mechanical negative inner talking and start a new positive and constructive inner speech from premises of fulfilled desire. Any time we feel misunderstood, misused, neglected, suspicious, afraid, we are spending our thoughts and wasting our time. Whenever we assume the feeling of being what we want to be, we are investing. We cannot abandon the moment to negative inner talking and expect to retain command of life.” –Neville Goddard

Imagination is the “coin of heaven.” It is the invisible currency which makes the attainment of all desires possible.

If a man can enter into the feeling state of already being that which he seeks to become, then he will have purchased the rights with the currency of imagination to experience that state as a physical reality.

Within us all is the capacity to revolutionize our lives through the creative power of thought. Whatever our circumstantial limitations may be, imagination is that which no external condition can devalue or depreciate.

Where our outer resources seem to be lacking, the inner resources of an open and creative mind are always overflowing with an infinite abundance of possibilities. Man only needs to look inside at the invisible treasure-house within and he will discover the coin of heaven, his own beautiful imagination, whereby anything he desires can be procured.

Sylvia Brown one said “whatever you ardently desire, vividly imagine, and enthusiastically act upon must inevitably come to pass.”

Let us dare to manifest the very best as we cease squandering our mental capital on ideas of limitation.

May we invest every thought in the contemplation of what we would like to become until our imagination is set on fire and consumes all that stands between us and the fulfillment of our destiny.

REFUSE TO GET BITTER

I refuse to get bitter. Not because I love other people so much, but because I love myself too much to allow my positive energy to be wasted and consumed by the hatred of another person.

We have all been offended at some point in our lives. We have all felt betrayed or let down.

The temptation to harbor feelings of resentment towards someone who seems to create inconveniences in our lives is present on an almost daily basis.

I am not here to tell you to go find your enemies and give them a hug. I am here to tell you to have enough respect for your future to let it go.

“Just like that?”

Just like that!

The moment you allow yourself to be filled with bitterness, you have just become a psychological slave to the person you are angry at. The only way you can free yourself is by liberating that other person from the prison of unforgiveness that you are holding them in.

I know it’s not easy, but your destiny is at stake.

In the end, resentment is the ultimate enemy. It robs you of your focus and rapidly diminishes your creative powers.

For the sake of your purpose in life. For the sake of your higher good. For the sake of your own health. For the sake of those whom you have been called to positively influence, choose to forgive.

That’s today’s two cents.

The Possible Self

 
 I worship the possibilities within myself. I now give praise to the unmanifest dimensions of my being.

Self-respect is the only suitable attitude to adopt towards a person of your status. If you had any idea of what your true nature was, you would fall on your knees and honor yourself like royalty.

The actor who forgot he was playing a role

We live in a world where people are honored on the basis of what they do for a living.

Should a celebrity or a high-ranking political official walk into a room, many of us would scramble about in a frenzy to ensure that such individuals received treatment and respect of the highest order.

The mere experience of being spoken to by such people is sufficient in some cases to produce a slight increase in our sense of self-worth.

Such experiences condition us to identify who we are with the roles that we play in life. We move about in this world as if we were professionals, students, mothers, children, co-workers, etc. In reality, these roles we play are merely finite expressions of the boundless essence that we truly are.

We are like actors who have become so absorbed in our roles that we have mistaken the character we are portraying for the actual person that we are.

You are more than your personality

The word “personality” is derived from the latin term “persona” which means “mask”. If we take etymology seriously, in this case, the implication is that our personalities are only masks concealing the broader identity of our Real Self.

A mask is not an intrinsically bad thing. It is a great device for exhibiting and exploring certain character traits. A mask can become a great hinderance, however, if one mistakes it for his Real Self.

The Real Self is not merely non-physical, but it is also trans-personal. Just as our bodies are physical extensions and expressions of our non-physical personality, our personalities are psychological extensions and expressions of our trans-personal essence.

In other words, we are all inconceivably more than what we think we are. We are not our jobs, our dreams, our experiences, or even our ranking on the social ladder. We are individualized expressions of The Infinite. As such, we all are worthy of praise.

I salute the divinity within you

There is a greeting which comes from Indian culture by the name of “Namaste.” It comes from the Sanskrit term “Namas” which means “to salute, bow, or adore.” One interpretation of the word “Namaste” is “I salute the divinity within you.” It is a greeting which honors the “divine spark” in all whom we encounter. This parallels neatly, in my opinion, with the declaration in The Book of Genesis that we have all been created in the “image and likeness of God.”

Experiencing life’s fullest capacity for true joy and lasting success requires that we look deeply enough into ourselves until we discover that Inner Radiance which is the source, substance, and space of the little self we think we are.

There are worlds of possibility lying beyond the limited perception of self we refer to as “me.”

Our recognition of and reverence for this Real Self is the key which unlocks the door to these hidden dimensions existing within our own being.

What to do when being positive feels fake?

If you’re trying to make changes for the better and it feels forced or fake, don’t accept that as a sure sign that you’re wasting your time.

Just because an activity feels unnatural in the beginning doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re being fake for performing it.

It’s natural until you change it

Let’s consider a couple of examples:

Suppose you’re accustomed to sleeping in until 8am or later, but you’re now hired for a new job that requires you to be there at 6am every day. Waking up at 4:30am or 5am is probably going to feel very unnatural until you reorient your body’s natural rhythms and sleep cycles.

What if you’ve never exercised a day in your life and you decide that you want to start today? Running for two blocks might feel like immanent death. Until your body starts to get into a decent fitness routine, even a mild jog is going to feel very unnatural.

Everything’s easy once you learn how to do it

If you’re accustomed to complaining everyday about everything that goes wrong, it’s probably going to feel a bit exaggerated when you try to describe your experiences in a more positive light.

That doesn’t mean you’re being fake. It just might mean that you’re spiritually or mentally out of shape and you could use a bit of conditioning in those areas. You may have become so accustomed to interpreting events in a negative way that it now seems like the normal, healthy, natural thing to do.

If you can be patient with yourself and commit to self-development as a process, you’ll be surprised and pleased with how much you can proactively accelerate your spiritual evolution.

Treat yourself to a psychological makeover

We are never stuck with the present day version of our personalities.

We have the power to recondition our thought patterns, retrain our reactionary instincts, and reinvent our emotional processing habits.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” -Romans 12:2

The PURSUIT of happiness can only be fulfilled by the PRACTICE of happiness. Happiness doesn’t just “happen”. It’s the reward we receive for investing in our own well~being.

We must commit to the daily process of building new habits of speech & thought in the same way that an athelete trains her body or an artist perfects his craft

There’s nothing fake about persistence

My friend Chaz, from the One Direction Forward blog had this to say:

From someone who has grit his teeth on many occasions and forced myself by faith to try the path less travelled (or never-before travelled), I can say with assurance that it is highly uncomfortable the first time or two. But as we repeat it, the new way becomes more and more familiar. Not unlike making a change to a golf swing.

Our thinking is influenced by a culture that tells us to abandon anything that feels like force. This is true to a certain extent. It is important to remember, however, that many positive changes can feel like you’re forcing it or faking it during the embryonic stages of growth. This sensation does not last forever.

With a proper and balanced approach to personal development, feeling discouraged and defeated can eventually start to feel as unnatural as it’s supposed to feel for a being whose essence emanates from Infinite Joy AKA “You!”
