Make the first impression on your mind

For the past month, I’ve made it a point to sit a book, usually one consisting of prayers and affirmations, beside my bed right before going to sleep. Upon waking up in the morning, I immediately grab the book and read a few paragraphs before doing anything else.

I’ve completely abandoned life long habits of waking up and turning on the radio or tv right away or grabbing a newspaper. I allow myself the freedom to do such things later, but my  readings come first.

My goal is to always be the first one to make an impression on my own mind.

I believe that how we set the tone of our day determines everything. Nothing affects how we set the tone of our day as much as those first bytes of information we process when we first wake up.

We significantly underestimate the long term effects of starting our days with reality show dramas, sad stories about the economy, or news of recent killings.

Such practices go a long way towards shaping the conceptual vocabulary we call upon when reacting to life circumstances.

I would like to challenge my readers to do what I am doing for one week. Make a personal vow to make sure  the first bit of information that touches your consciousness in the morning is something that accords with your highest values.

I think you’ll appreciate the clarity of mind that ensues.

At least that’s my two cents.

Cheers,

T.K. Coleman
