“What time is it? Game time!”
During the Michael Jordan dynasty, those were the words spoken by the Chicago Bulls before every game.
It was a way of reminding everyone on the team that practice-time was over. It was now time to perform. It was now time to implement the strategies they rehearsed.
Practice is necessary. If you want to go far in any field or endeavor, you have to put in the time necessary to develop mastery over your craft. Moreover, practice can’t be seen as a one-time thing. You have to be committed to personal improvement and professional development for the long-haul.
As important as practice is, however, it’s only half the equation. At some point in your journey, you have to put yourself out there, take risks, and get a feel for the real thing. Performance isn’t something you do after practice. It’s something you do in-between practice.
I’m not here to tell you that you’re ready for the world. I’m not here to tell you that you have what it takes. I’m not here to tell you that you can do it. I’m here to tell you that you’ll never be ready until you engage reality before you feel ready. I’m here to tell you that you’ll never have what it takes until you go after things before you have what it takes. I’m here to tell you that you can’t do anything until you decide to do it without requiring guarantees for everything.
What time is it? It’s time to recognize that your whole life has been preparing you for the next step.
What time is it? It’s time to realize that you don’t need to be perfect or pretentious in order to reach for high standards.
What time is it? It’s time to find out what you’re made of through experience, not theory alone.
What time is it? It’s time to respect the time you’ve already dedicated to learning.
What time is it? It’s time to abandon the mentality that you need to read one more book before you begin.
What time is it? It’s time to take the field. It’s time to step on the court. It’s time to take a shot. It’s time to risk an airball. It’s time to risk a turnover. It’s time to evolve by getting involved.
We need your gifts. We need your talents. We need your efforts. We need your story. We need your contributions. You can always come back for more practice.
Get out here and get a piece of the action. It’s game time!
