Choose Goals Over Consensus

If you’re writing, saying, doing, or creating something that’s not capable of being misunderstood, I can assure you of one thing:

it’s completely useless.

If it’s worth it to you to put it out there, it will be worth it to someone else to put it down.

Should you stop communicating? No.

Should you stop trying to improve your message? No.

Should you ignore or avoid all forms of criticism? No.

Here’s what you should do:

Liberate yourself from the illusion that it’s possible to find a mode of expression that will go over well with every audience.

Doing things that are useful isn’t the same as doing things that are universally understood.
