How dare you walk around smiling and feeling good when there are so many things wrong with the world?
How dare you walk around frowning and feeling down when there are so many things right with life?
At every moment, you have a legitimate reason to feel overwhelmingly grieved about a large number of bad things that are happening. And at every moment, you also have a legitimate reason to express immense gratitude for thousands of things that are making it possible for you to eat, drink, sleep, breathe, think, or dream.
For any given emotion that you allow yourself to feel, a convincing argument could be made for why you should feel a different one. So if you’re in the business of denying yourself the right to feel good or the right to feel bad, you’re in a losing business.
If you feel good, you have the right to feel that way. If you feel bad, you have the right to feel that way. And if you want to feel different from your current state, you have the right to pursue that. Your feelings will always be contradicted from without. So you might as well save yourself some time and start from within.
